The dismissal of Benazir Bhutto as Prime Minister has once more weakened Pakistan’s fragile political institutions. In less than a decade since the authoritarian rule of General Zia ul Haq was replaced by a democratic government in Pakistan, there have been three elected Prime Ministers, three caretaker Prime Ministers and three general elections. …
Benazir Bhutto is philosphical about the public reaction to her dismissal. ‘When you are in opposition, you are always the darling of the Press, but when you assume political office invariably you have to undertake measures which are unpopular and therefore you make enemies.’
