Of the 50,000 men who served in The Black Watch during the First World War, the story of Private (Baron) Hubert Juliu de Reuter is unique. /aged 36 when was was declared in August 1914, he had begun his military service in the Sportsman's Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment. Instead of being drawn from the same geographical area, these battalions consisted of 'pals': men who had the same interests, mainly in sports but also the media.
